Homes in Acton

Acton became a municipal borough in 1921 and was a major industrial centre in the twentieth century, particularly for motor vehicles. Its residential areas include Acton Green, Acton Town, Acton Central, East, West, North and South Acton. On its southern edge is Bedford Park, begun in 1875 by Jonathan Carr just north of Turnham Green station. Its red-brick Queen Anne Revival houses, by Norman Shaw and other Victorian architects, have tile-hung walls, varied gables, bay windows and elaborate chimneys, and it has been described as the world's first garden suburb.

Most of Bedford Park is protected by an Ealing conservation area, designated in 1969, with a smaller part in Hounslow. In 1967, 356 of its houses were individually Grade II listed.

In the 2021 Census, 40% of households in the Acton Central and Bedford Park statistical areas lived in houses (23% terraced) and 56% in flats, a quarter of them in converted houses. The median semi-detached price in Acton Central was about £1.4 million in the year to March 2026, and the median for all homes in Bedford Park about £1.1 million.

Planning and practical notes for Acton

Ealing's Acton conservation areas are Acton Green, Acton Park, Acton Town Centre, Bedford Park and Mill Hill Park. Bedford Park is also one of the six with Article 4 directions, where the council says planning permission is generally needed for extensions and minor alterations, porches, exterior painting, boundaries, vehicle access and hardstandings.

If your Bedford Park house is listed, listed building consent is needed for alterations inside as well as out, on top of any planning permission. The Hounslow side of the suburb is covered by Hounslow Council, so check which council covers your address first. Elsewhere in Acton, Ealing's SPD 4 interim guidance applies, and most houses keep permitted development rights.
